Weekend trip to Copenhagen – R&C’s recommendations

Rose&Clementine went to the pretty and cold Copenhagen a few times and is happy to share its favourite addresses with you.

But be prepared! Everything in Denmark is very expensive, from food to hotels, transportation, etc. So, you need to keep that information in mind before you get there.

The Square Hotel
The Square hotel is very well located on the main square of the city which is called Radhuspladsen. It is very convenient to visit the city and go out at night. Also, you are never too far from your warm bedroom when you are feeling too cold outside and dream about warmth and cosiness! It is clean, modern, nice and simple. The address is Radhuspladsen 14.

Copenhagen Island
Less central but very modern and nice hotel. Rooms are more spacious than at the Square and the hotel offers the convenience of a good quality on-site restaurant. The hotel is located by the river Syndhavnen so you might get a nice open view on it from your room. The only negative side is that the staff at the reception can be unpleasant. But Rose&Clementine might have been unlucky.  Adress: Kalvebod Brygge 53

Sankt Gertruds Kloster
There is a very nice restaurant that R&C would like to recommend for a very nice dinner out. It is located in the center, at walking distance to Radhuspladsen. It is a beautiful 14th century cloister lit by thousands of candles and as most of the rooms are underground the candle light gives a nice intimate and secretive atmosphere. Perfect for a romantic evening.

The food is very good. It is a mix of Danish and international cuisine.  It is a bit expensive but it is worth the experience. Do not forget to book a table.  Address: Hauser Plads 32

The Royal Cafe
Nice fashionable and kitsch restaurant perfect for lunch in the middle of a day of shopping. Try on the super fashionable Danish Smushis! They basically are mini portions of a dish, perfect to try on several dishes. Tasty and modern food, nice cosy place. You will love going there with your girlfriends. It is located on a main shopping pedestrian street. Address: Amargertorv 6.

Smushis at The Cafe Royal. Photo credits R&C.

Chili Milli
Nice and cheap deli take-away but with tables where you can have a quick lunch for example. It offers tasty and freshly cooked dishes. It is a chain and you can find Chili Milli on several locations in the center and one of them is Radhusplatsen.

La Galette
Little French creperie for a lunch break. Very tiny, quite good and cheap (for CPH but all is relative). Adress: Larsbjørnsstræde 9

Agnes cupcakes
The best cupcakes R&C ever tried! A paradise for the sweet toothed ones. You can sit down for an afternoon coffee and sweets. Clever rec: go for the mini cupcakes, you can try more flavours!. It is very central and located in the Nørreport area which is between Radhusplatsen and Nyhavn. R&C spotted a website that mentions it: A must! The address is Sværtegade 2.

Obviously… But you need to book a long while in advance. Check out the Rose&Clementine post on this restaurant.

Nice walks and shopping

The emblematic little harbour of Nyhavn is a must see in the city. It is the cutest area of Copenhagen both in day time to see the warm colours of the buildings and at night because it is well lit with taste.

Nyhavn- Photo credits R&C

Get lost on purpose in the charming little streets between Radhuspladsen and Nyhavn. This area is called Nørreport. The beautiful and colourful old buildings in these streets really are another must see. And, if you like vintage clothing, that is where you want to go shopping! R&C always starts at the second hand KBH.K shop on Studiestraede 32B and walk around the area. There are lots of vintage shops around there and some of them are actually cheap! In the same area, make sure you visit the pedestrian shopping streets Strøget and Købmagergade with many small boutiques and the two malls Illum and Magasin.

If you are not too cold, get out of the wind protected city center and dare to walk to the Little Mermaid. The statue is very little but so emblematic of the country! And once you are there, go and visit the castle.

The Statens Museum for Kunst is a museum R&C visited a few months ago (Sølvgade 48, 1307, Denmark). It offers both temporary and permanent expositions. A temporary expo that R&C liked was the Modern Art show on European artists. On the other hand, the permanent exposition was very dense although interesting. The walls were packed with paintings the ones above the others, sometimes 3 or 4 on one row, but the retrospective on art evolution over the centuries is remarkable.

Please give your feedback if you visit these places!

What to say about Hakei? The designs are elegant and modern, the cuts are perfect, the fabrics of the clothe are soft and high quality, and they feel silky on the skin. Beautiful.

Hakei is a family business that was created in the Spanish Pais Vasco in 1946 and it recently expanded in Paris and Nice in France where Rose & Clementine is convinced that it is going to be very successful. French women will like the style of the brand for sure.

In Barcelona, R&C recommends the Hakei shop located on Rambla Catalunya.

Dazzling treats at Jean-Philippe Patisserie, Bellagio Hotel, in Las Vegas USA.

Dazzling sweets and pastries

Jean-Philippe Patisserie creation, Las Vegas. Photo credits R&C.

Who has never been caught day dreaming while staring at beautiful and appealing sweet creations of a patisserie (pastries and sweets shop) anywhere in the world? The French for instance are very keen on desserts, and that is probably why new patisseries and bakeries are always blooming in the French capital. They are everywhere. But not only in France.

Rose & Clementine has been travelling to the US this Summer and stopped for a night in Las Vegas.

Everything in Vegas hotels must be dazzling, impressive, sparkling, shiny and perfect looking. Hence Vegas is an amusement park for adults, really. You feel like you are out of reality and it is fun. If seing a Sphynx next to the Gizeh Pyramides, Venice canals turned into a mall inside a hotel or a palm tree next to the Eiffel Tower make you laugh, you will enjoy Vegas very much!  Just see it as it is, a fun amusement park for adults and take everything you see quite lightly.

In Vegas, Rose & Clementine was amazed by the creations of Jean-Philippe Patisserie in the Bellagio hotel in Las Vegas. Its patissiers (the pastrie makers) are very talented artists. It was impressive.

R&C is happy to share some pictures of these creations with you. Today, it will be for the pleasure of the eye only, but maybe one day you will have the opportunity to taste one of Jean-Philippe Patisserie’s beautiful creations in the US. Enjoy!

Rose & Clementine’s favourite day of shopping in Barcelona.(1) Uterque & Hoss Intropia

Rose & Clementine’s favourite high quality shopping in Barcelona, all amazing Spanish brands that are being very successful, expanding abroad and that you might be able to find wherever you are… But Spanish prices are a lot kinder to your wallet, so if you plan on a trip to Barcelona or any other large city in Spain, come with an empty suitcase! This is an advice you will not regret following.

Do not forget that all the shops are closed on Sunday here. However, they close quite late, around 9:00 or 9:30 PM, some of them at 10:ooPM.

All the following brands have shops in Barcelona city center. Take a glimpse at their new Fall 2011/Winter 2012 collections.

– Uterqüe –

Top quality leather, perfect cuts, beautiful designs for all items and extremely comfortable shoes. Rose & Clementine loves it.

In Barcelona, R&C recommends the Uterque shop located on Passeig de Gracia.

AMSTERDAM – A few tips for a little break.

If you are planning a little break in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Rose & Clementine would like to share some tips with you. In this article, you will find their favourite addresses for dinner, a day break, a brunch and bike rentals in Amsterdam Centrum, the city centre, where you will be likely to spend most of your time. They are of good quality, far from the many tourist traps you can find in touristic areas all over the world, and places where locals go.

The Dutch are not famous for their own gastronomy but as they are the best traders in the world and Amsterdam is the harbour where world international commerce was born, you can roughly find all the many spices and food products that exist. These are probably some of the many reasons why you will be able to find a very large panel of cuisine types in Amsterdam restaurants.

Here are some examples and our recommendations:

o       Best brunch in town:

DEBAKKERSWINKEL: Very nice.  You might need to queue a bit.

Warmoesstraat 69

1012 HX Amsterdam, Netherlands

+31 (0)20 4898000 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting            +31 (0)20 4898000      end_of_the_skype_highlighting

o       Little day break :

Herengracht Café: For a good soup, a tasty sandwitch, a fresh salad or even a coffee, a cuppa or an aperitive, the Herengracht Café is a nice place to stop at for a day or early evening break. It has a terrace on the canals.

Herengracht 435

1017 BR Amsterdam

+31 (0)20 6162482 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting            +31 (0)20 6162482      end_of_the_skype_highlighting

o       Bike rentals

Forget about taxis as taxi drivers are very likely to take you on a city tour before reaching your destination. On top of that, rides even short are very expensive.

Good and cheap address to rent out some bikes.

MacBike Leidseplein – Rental & Tire Service

Weteringsschans 2

How to get there: MacBike Leidseplein can be reached by tram nr. 1, 2, 5, 6, 7 and 10; (stop Leidseplein)

o       For dinner (beware: some restaurant kitchens close at 21:30!):

=> (-) Cheap, (+) more expensive, (++) very expensive.

For many locals, Sama Sebo is the best Indonesian restaurant in town.  Indonesian cuisine, quite typical of the Netherlands as Indonesia was an old Dutch colony. Nice busy atmosphere. Good quality and a must if you are in a discovery mood.

Our recommendation would be to go for their Rijssttafel menu with which you will be served many different dishes in small quantities. Ideal to try on a bit of everything!

Menu Rijssttafel (€ 29,50 p.p).

Booking : necessary.

Cute little restaurant on the canals, very close from Leidseplein. Peruvian cuisine. Nice to try on, good quality and large quantities. Lovely staff.

Booking : necessary as the place is tiny.

Good Italian restaurant on the canals. Tasty antipasti, nice pizzas but the restaurant is mostly renown for their elaborate pasta dishes. Italian staff.

Booking: recommended.

Amsterdam Singel 426 (Spui)

020 – 624 50 93

Beautiful restaurant, ideally located on the canals. Charming view over the canals if you ask, at the booking, to get a table downstairs by the window.

International cuisine.  Very good dishes. The place has the Bib Gourmand Michelin classification.

Perfect for an after dinner romantic walk around.

Booking: Compulsary and a few days before you intend to go.

Brouwersgracht 60

(+) MOMO:

Japanese/Asian cuisine. Very trendy. Probably best with your girlfriends  Carrie Bradshaw and Samantha Jones rather than with your boyfriend or husband for a romantic evening. But that is up to you!

If you like hype, go there! Close from Leidseplein.

Booking: Compulsary and a few days before you intend to go.

Hobbemastraat 1,

Superb and known by locals only. International/Mediterranean cuisine. The Chefs prepare the dishes with fresh, seasonal  and high quality products hence the menus change on a very regular basis.

The concept is that you do not chose your dishes. You just need to tell if you have dietary requirements and how many courses you wish to have. You will be proposed a glass of wine with every dish. Delicious.

The restaurant is lit by candels only which provides a very romantic atmosphere. Very good and pleasant service.

Booking : Compulsary and a few days before you intend to go.

NOMA, Copenhagen – A superb gastronomic experience at the world’s best restaurant.

NOMA, Copenhagen – A superb gastronomic experience at the world’s best restaurant.

Noma was crowned the Best restaurant in the world by the San Pellegrino Awards 2010 and 2011 run by The Restaurant magazine based on the selection of 800 of the most influential food writers, critics and chefs around the world.

New concept of a luxury restaurant

A key word combination: Simplicity and utmost refinement for a Scandinavian concept of luxury.

On your way to Noma, you are first striked by the uncommon location of the restaurant that is set in an old warehouse in a very quiet and silent area of Copenhagen city.

Then, when you step in the restaurant, the simplicity of the room beautifully decorated with rustic and natural materials not only fits the surroundings beautifully. It also manages to provide a warm and cosy atmosphere, quite unexpected when you were driving around dark and large warehouses a few minutes earlier.

However, if you are lucky enough to get a table by a window, you might have a view over the enchanting Nyhavn area on the other shore.

A nice young atmosphere

Noma’s Masterchef René Redzepi receives the clients at the reception. He is young, good looking and welcoming. Only 33 years old and already seen as the best chef in the world. Quite an achievement.

The staff is also very young, pleasant and smiling. It seems like they are having the time of their lives working there, which you as a client can imagine quite far from the gilded and stiff atmosphere in most world top level restaurants.

A unique art experience

The chefs themselves come to present the dishes they have just prepared for you. You can feel the chef’s passion about their art and imagine the effort they have put into the preparation of their creations. Charming.

Clients find out about the origins of the ingredients and the cooking techniques which adds up to the whole superb experience. That seems to be part of the transparency, generous and honest concept of gastronomy supported by Chef René Redzepi.

Surprising and innovative combinations, news tastes, new ingredients you would have never suspected tasting before such as wild plants and flowers.

The beautiful and original presentation, the colours, the perfectly matching textures, the new surprising and delicious flavours all match to make the utmost delight for the client’s eyes and mouth.

Every dish is a masterpiece.

Green gastronomy

To make the place stand out even more, the ingredients are grown in Denmark. The dishes are all prepared with basic and organic products from Nordic terroirs. Some vegetables are even planted, grown and collected for the own use of the restaurant. René Redzepi explains that following the growth of the products and harvesting the crops themselves makes them want to be true to original flavours and make the most of all parts of the ingredients.

If you are willing to try on the Noma experience, you should know that you have to book months in advance. You will have a choice between the 7 and 12 course menu.

Also, if you are a student and penniless, bare in mind that during the Copenhagen Cooking festival, Noma offers meals to students for a symbolic price.

This year Copenhagen Cooking festival will take place between August 18th to 28th 2011.
